How To Not Feel Lonely

Last week I was talking to one of my friend and she told me how alone and lonely she felt, as she lived all by herself in the lockdown with no human interaction.

I am sure a lot of us are living alone and it is very normal to feel overwhelmed , bored or lonely. We as humans are designed to be social. We need some human interaction to feel included, to feel normal.

But what exactly feeling lonely means?

Feeling lonely not necessarily have to do with being alone. Sometimes you can feel lonely in the midst of a crowd.

Feeling lonely has to do with, you not being able to connect with anyone emotionally, feeling disconnected. Or the feeling of “not included” or “not wanted”.

Let me tell you this, it’s okay to feel lonely sometimes, specially given what is going on now, loneliness can creep in. But, the trick is to keep yourself engaged, take charge and be positive.

Here are five ways that can help you not feel lonely, if you are staying alone:

Communication is the key.

Talking to someone – your friends or family or colleague, could be a great way of not feeling lonely and alone all the time. It’s okay to share what you are feeling. Just let it out.

Do not hesitate to take the first step. Pick up the phone and call someone, instead of complaining that no one calls you.

Thanks to technology, you can now “video call” people, what’s better than that?

Be Creative

Perfect enemy of loneliness.

Unleash the creativity in you and go all out. Do anything that you like, cooking or painting or sketching or dancing or cleaning or organizing or writing.

Whatever makes you happy, do it! You can even learn new things if you want. For example, I am planning to learn how to bake ❀️🧁

Entertain Yourself

Laughter is the best medicine.

I know, given the number of platforms we have today, it can be overwhelming to choose what to watch. I have been there!

Although we are spoiled for choices, there is something for everyone to watch. So just pick your genre of interest and press play!

If possible, watch something funny, Laugh out loud! 🀣

I myself prefer Comedy over all the other genre. I mean who doesn’t deserve a good laugh ? My all time favorite series “F.r.i.e.n.d.s”. I can watch it in loop. Few of my other favorites: “Young Sheldon” , “Big Bang Theory” , “2 Broke Girls”.

Sleep Well

Sleep like a baby.

You may think how sleeping well will help you not feel lonely. Well, it does indirectly! When you sleep better, you feel better, you feel more energized and indirectly this energy helps you in being positive and not feeling lonely.

Do not compromise with your sleep timings. Make sure you are getting minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep. Sleeping properly is as important as doing exercise or eating healthy. It helps your brain function more efficiently.

Adopt a Pet

Our perfect companions with four feet.

Let’s just agree, Pets are the best! They can be your perfect companion and would never let you feel isolated or lonely. They are so adorable that you can never ignore them.

Having a pet also adds little discipline in your life. Because you may ignore what you need but you cannot ignore what your cute little pet needs. You will have to play with them, take them for a walk, feed them. This way you can spend some really great time without having to feel lonely.

This is in my bucket list too! I want to adopt a pet since so long now. I am definitely going to do it this year!!

Hope at least some of the tips were useful and would help you feel better.

Always remember, we all are in this together. We will fight it, just hang in there and don’t let go of the hope. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I do feel for those who live on their own, especially if you come into the vulnerable category, makes it even harder. I think in the early days of lockdown it was a challenge because of getting hold of things, but stores switched to online selling which made is somewhat easier.
Those tips are great, can I add ‘singing’ to that list. Doesn’t matter what you think of your voice, singing it good. Better still, record yourself and listen back.
Also cannot stress importance of a good sleep – you will feel really energised the next day.

This is so beautiful. I loved your tips too.

I was one of those people in the beginning where I would need people, but with time, I worked on myself and become so content that I hardly feel the need.

    As if I’ve gained Vairaagya.

    Loved your post.
